I admit this is shameless, but I gots bills:
Intro: This is the first 2D cartoon in what has become a series of cartoons about the doodles and comics in my sketchbook. The Timmy character was originally just sort of the devil on my shoulder but has evolved into something a little more and a little different. I call him “Mistor” now to avoid the idea that I am a screaming ball of energy. I’m actually fairly quiet and calm. The transition effect was always part of my vision for these cartoons. I’ve seen it done before, but I don’t believe it has been done this dynamically. I had wanted to see this realized in 3D, but 2D did the job 100 times better for 100 times less work. Less work was important since the last 20 seconds or so of this cartoon (except for “Shun!”) were made up on the fly.

Synopsis: Timmy (Mistor in later cartoons) writes himself a fan letter, and then stumbles onto a little slice of the horror and beauty the internet has to offer in a kinetic masterpiece of awesomeness jam packed with one-liners and catchphrases you will be driving your friends and loved ones nuts with for weeks.

Production Technique: This bad boy is hand drawn on paper with pencils, sharpies, and art markers. The piece was put together in Adobe After Effects. The transition effect was done in After Effects. Sound was recorded in a little booth with Adam Levine’s help and edited in an old copy of Cool Edit Pro.

Who Made It: I created the entire thing. My roommate Adam Levine helped me record audio and provided the “You’ve got mail” and “Dearest Timothy…” voices. Adam isn’t in Maroon 5. Sorry, ladies. Timmy/Mistor and the penis monster are me.

Extra Info: I originally animated the cartoon in pencil. Due to a deadline and my excitement, the process took about 3 weeks. Later I had to go back and copy the animation with sharpie markers and reshoot the whole thing. That took about 6 weeks, and I hated every moment of it.

Date Completed: Around April 2005
